Labor and Delivery

Labor and Delivery

Since I was a little girl, I have always been interested in nursing. Leading up to college I knew I wanted to be a nursing major, get a master’s degree, and become a nurse practitioner but I haven’t put much thought into a specialization because I knew my nursing classes would give me further insight than any website on Google. When Chaya Swedberg, the labor and delivery nursing speaker, came to our class she presented her perspective of the reality of this specialization. I really enjoyed how she expressed her passion for her career, because I also have that passion and can imagine myself to be similar to her in the near future. A surprising factor that she explained was that her interest is not in babies, like most people would expect, but that she loves the mothers. This is exactly why I waited to get to listen to a nurse that has firsthand experience with a specialization. She made a point that was really eye opening to me because, I don’t have an interest in infants due to the reason that I am a people person and I enjoy being able to make connections with others. Labor and delivery nursing is now a possibility for me because she explained that she is able to make beautiful connections with the mothers because she just aided her through an amazing experience.
