Reflecting on a Learning Objective

Leadership to most people is when a person within a group is more powerful and steers the group in certain directions. To me, as a nursing major, I have now realized that leadership is an amazing characteristic and anyone can be a leader. A leader should be kind and willing to work with the others around them but can also take ignition in order to make positive decisions that will benefit others. A good leader should be able to encourage others to maximize their efforts in order to get towards their goal. Throughout Intro to Nursing, I have noticed that as a nurse, leadership is not a single person demanding orders from other nurses but just the opposite. A leading nurse should be aware of the strengths of their peers so they know exactly who they need to successfully help a patient. Leadership and teamwork can go hand in hand as long as its executed correctly. Nurse leaders should be caring, compassionate, empathetic, intellectual, and inspiring. An assignment that showed me the truth of leadership was our group presentations. A group of multiple people, that do not necessarily know each other, but share the same interest of nursing came together and split up the work to make a strong presentation. My groups topic was teamwork and collaboration, so leadership was a prominent characteristic. Looking forward to my next year as a nursing major, I am looking forward to learning more about Professionalism. Nurses can be incredibly personable but it is also important to know how to address and converse with our patients and other medical staff in a professional manner. I am hoping to learn how and what to say in certain situations to keep my patients content with the situation, the last thing I would ever want to do is intentionally upset or stress out my patients. I am there to calm there nerves as much as possible while still being realistic and certifiable. I am taking psychology and english which can be helpful to me thinking as a nurse because they both require critical thinking, but I believe a huge benefit to my nursing career is that I have been a waitress at an Italian restaurant for over 3 years. Helping and entertaining my customers has become a second nature to me and I am positive this will carry over to my nursing career. There have been stressful times with unhappy customers that I had to think quickly and resolve a solution while communicating from customer to my managers that speak broken English. This job has also taught me leadership because I have trained new employees but I always made sure to make them feel comfortable and on task because it would be beneficial to them, the customers, and staff.
