Learning Outcome #3

Learning Outcome #3

The course reading that accurately represents my active and critical reading is “Consider the Lobster” by David Foster Wallace. This reading was dense with all types of information and opinions, so I knew it was important to carefully read through it in order to understand all the concepts and topics included. Annotating to me is having a highlighter to use to highlight important information such as facts, apparent opinions, quotes, and anything that significantly sticks out to me as I read. After each paragraph I like to write in the margins next to them to quickly summarize the main ideas so in the future when I am referring to the article, I can quickly find the pieces of information I need. When writing an essay and using evidence from a specific article, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the authors opinions and the information they provided, and why that information is important to their claims. Wallace gave background about a specific event, history of lobster usage, lobsters life specifics, and evidence from contradicting opinions. Even though I was not aware of the following essay topic that was based on this article, I knew this information was important to I made sure to understand it all and highlight it so I can refer to them for my own essay.
